Come Feel the Beat!

The Symphony’s First Production of Feel the Beat

A childhood favourite continues

A cherished community event, Feel the Beat is a lighthearted introduction to live symphonic music for kids of all ages, even those trapped in adults’ bodies. Join the Symphony at Southminster United Church on Thursday, May 25 at 7:30 PM for the public performance.

“We are thrilled to be continuing this program, picking up where the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music left off after seven years,” states Executive Director Melanie Gattiker. “From having kids compose their own piece to learning about how Beethoven grappled with his hearing loss, each year’s event offers something new and different, while engaging all of the senses.”

Every May, Southminster fills with thousands of children – many of whom are seeing some of the instruments for the first time. Since this is the first year the Lethbridge Symphony will be producing Feel the Beat, it is even more meaningful to the musicians. The evening will feature Camille Saint-Saëns’ classic Carnivals of the Animals – featuring a brand-new narration, and exciting selections from Harry Potter by John Williams.

“We have four daytime concerts for school groups that have been sold out for weeks. Over 3000 people will be in the audience for those events,” explains Gattiker. “But we thought, why limit this to school groups? Why not present a concert that’s open to the public at discounted prices so everyone can enjoy the fun? So that’s exactly what we’re doing on Thursday, May 25 at 7:30 PM – and with the concert being so short (about an hour), the whole family can come out to enjoy this!”

Feel the Beat is part of the Lethbridge Symphony’s Vibrations Youth Programming, which also includes Children’s Pass and the Opera Collaboration, among many others. The Symphony believes in educating and encouraging youngsters through music, while also furnishing them the opportunity to experience its power.
