Lethbridge Symphony Opens Season with Epic Work
Bruckner’s Romantic Symphony to fill Southminster Church with big orchestral sounds
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra begins its 2014-2015 Symphony Series at Southminster Church on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 8 PM with Romantic Grandeur, a program featuring Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 (The Romantic) and Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites.
“Our season opener is going to be massive,” notes Music Director Glenn Klassen. “Bruckner is the heir to an orchestral tradition established by Beethoven and Wagner, and like those before him, he thinks big. Get ready for expansive strings, sonorous winds and ringing brass choirs. Southminster will be filled with sound, and our LSO is ready to go.”
“The Symphony is subtitled the Romantic, evoking images of mediaeval knights and romantic chivalry so popular in the late 19th century. Music of this kind was as popular as The Lord of the Rings is today. As a prelude, we have programmed music from Peer Gynt, which is based on a Norwegian folk tale and features the rollicking In the Hall of Mountain King, and the well-known Morning Mood. Our audiences will certainly be proud to have this scale of orchestral music alive and well in Southern Alberta.”
“The start of the orchestra season is always exciting,” adds Board President Sandy Brunelle. “This year it is particularly so, coming off such a successful season, as reported at the Annual General Meeting earlier this month. Last season we set new audience records, brought on many new sponsors and donors from our generous community, and reached more young people than ever before. Momentum is most certainly building.”
The Symphony Series continues on Monday, November 17, 2014 with the LSO’s annual Pops concert entitled Silver Screen Classics. Music from films including The Godfather, the James Bond series and Pirates of the Caribbean will be enhanced with big screen images to create a Hollywood Movie Palace.
Tickets for Romantic Grandeur range from $20 – $55, and are available anytime at lethbridgesymphony.org or Monday through Friday, 1 – 5 PM by calling 403.328.6808. Flexible subscription packages are still available, and audience members aged 15-29 can sign up for the LSO Access Pass and receive further discounts.
