The only symphony which he nicknamed, Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony is known as the Romantic Symphony, though the name refers not to the modern concept of romantic love, but to the medieval romance of Wagner’s Lohengrin and Siegfried operas. This was his first major success, and has been featured on several motion picture soundtracks.
Written as incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name, modern audiences are also more familiar with Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites than they usually know.
