The LSO’s 2017-2018 Season consisted of the following: six Symphony Series concerts, Love Notes, three Kids Choir concerts, and five Feel the Beat performances. The LSO’s season also included three outstanding chamber music events in our Extras concerts: two by Musaeus and one featuring a trio consisting of Peter Visentin, violin; Mark Rodgers, cello; and Deanna Oye, piano.

A special thank you goes to Sandra Klassen, librarian; Mark Rodgers, personnel manager; Nancy Graham, stage manager; and Gregg Samuel, equipment manager. These individuals receive a small honorarium for their efforts, but it does not provide adequate compensation for the many hours required to fulfil their responsibilities. Thank you very much! The show literally would not go on without you. Thanks also to our orchestra representative Timothy Janzen; your willingness to serve the musicians of the LSO and the LSA board of directors is very much appreciated.

Many thanks to the Artistic Committee who helped shape the 2017-2018 Season: John Gilliat, chair; Diane Llewelyn-Jones, board representative; Robert George, Thomas Staples, and Graham Tagg. I appreciate your knowledge and assistance programming the various concerts. Your collective insights are the key to distilling the wealth of orchestral music into the performances our audiences have come to expect and enjoy.

Thank you to the Board of Directors for your continued commitment to the LSO striving towards improvement and growth. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and financial support are essential and appreciated. Please accept my sincere thanks and appreciation for your involvement with the LSO, and for your part in keeping the music playing.

I would also like to thank Melanie Gattiker, Mary Opyr, Haley Neufeld, Erin Parker, and Amber Bley for all your efforts looking after the countless administrative and operational details.

To our talented and dedicated musicians who continue delivering quality performances; thank you for your continued hard work preparing the challenging repertoire. I am grateful for your commitment and am honoured to be making music together with you.
As I reflect on the 2017-18 season, I am reminded of what is possible if we collaborate and all work together towards a common goal. In particular I think of our four fully-staged sold-out performances of The Nutcracker – our first collaboration with the local dance community. led by director Tara Fenton-Groves; our annual collaboration with the U of L Opera Workshop under the inspired direction of Dr. Blaine Hendsbee, and our performance of Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks together with Sinfonia Allegro under the skilled direction of Lise Boutin.

As we review our successful 2017-2018 Season and optimistically embark on the 2018-2019 Season I am reminded of our mission statement – “to create and promote a first-class orchestra producing memorable musical experiences for audiences of all ages.” While we can be proud of what we have achieved, our mission statement encourages us to build on our past successes – to create and promote a better first-class orchestra and produce more memorable musical experiences for larger audiences.

Thanks to all members of the LSA for your continued support. We need each and every one of you in order to manifest future successes.

Respectfully Submitted,
Glenn Klassen
