Sarah Viejou

Co-Principal

(BMus ’11, MMus ’15) studied with Dr. Thomas Staples at the University of Lethbridge. She has performed with the Lethbridge Symphony since 2008. Sarah grew up in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, and enjoys every chance she has to visit.

Karly Lewis

Karly is an active educator and musician in Southern Alberta. She has been an educator for 18 years working with the Rocky View School Division and the Lethbridge School Division. Karly is passionate about education, music – both as a conductor, teacher and musician – and her students. Karly has been involved in the planning and execution of three successful TedX events in Lethbridge, served on the Artistic Development Committee and Conductor Search Committees for the Lethbridge Community Band Society, and is a Co-Chair for the 2020 Health and Physical Education Conference.g soon!

Helena Golinowski

Helena Golinowski is originally from Winnipeg, MB and joined the LSO in 2017. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Music History/Theory and now works as a piano teacher. When she is not playing music she can usually be found immersed in a good book.

Keith Griffioen

Co-Principal

Keith Griffioen began playing trumpet at the age of 3 and has never stopped. He is returning to the Lethbridge Symphony as co-Principal Trumpet after an eight year absence to raise young children. He also performs with the Lethbridge Big Band and the Aeris Brass Quintet. Keith teaches Music Education and Evaluation at the University of Lethbridge

Jodi Groenheide

Principal

Jodi Groenheide graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Masters of Music in Percussion Performance where she studied with Dr. John Wooton. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Flute and Percussion Performance at the
University of Lethbridge where she studied with Adam Mason and Sarah Gieck.

Matt Groenheide

Matt Groenheide is a Lethbridge-born percussionist, specializing classical percussion, drumset, and a variety of drums from around the world.  Matt first played with the LSO in 2004 and 2019-2020 will be his third consecutive season as the Principal Percussionist.

Matt Thiessen

I have been a member of the Symphony since 2013 taking multiple roles in percussion as well as the role of Principal Timpanist and Percussionist. I graduated with my Bachelor of Music performance in percussion from the University of Lethbridge in 2016. I have performed throughout Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Hong Kong, Hawaii and mainland USA.

Jace Eagle Bear

also English Horn

Jace began playing the oboe in high school, and in university trained under David Sussman. He currently works in Calgary, where he is an in-demand clinician. Besides oboe, he also learned the erhu, and serves as the concertmaster for the Calgary Chinese Orchestra.

Joelle Strang

Joelle Strang, an oboist, has been playing with LSO for nearly 10 years. She grew up in Winnipeg where she learned to play the oboe in junior high and continued playing through high school. In 2009, she moved to Lethbridge and to pursue her studies and completed a Bachelor of Music degree in 2013; upon graduation she was awarded the Faculty or Fine Arts Gold Medal.

Esther Vonkeman-Roset

also English Horn

Esther Vonkeman-Roset began playing oboe at the age of 9, and has performed with the Lethbridge Symphony since 2003. In 2007, under the instruction of David Sussman, she obtained her Bachelor of Music (with Distinction) in music performance (oboe and English horn). Esther has a career as an Environmental Scientist, but continues to perform with various musical groups throughout Lethbridge, and teaches oboe and English horn as a clinician and private instructor.
