The competition is open to all classical music performers (piano, strings, voice, winds, brass, and percussion). Applicants’ place of regular music study OR permanent address must be in Alberta, and they must be studying music at a Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 10 or equivalent level as of their date of application.
In addition, competitors MUST be full-time students (as defined by the institution they are attending), currently enrolled in an accredited school (i.e. primary or secondary) or post-secondary institution of some sort. Competitors who discontinue, lose, or otherwise give up their student status prior to the Live Finals in September 2022 are automatically disqualified.
Candidates must specify one or more proposed solo works to be performed with the Lethbridge Symphony during the 2023-2024 Season; all proposed works are subject to approval by the Music Director. Should there be an issue with a proposed solo work, the candidate will be informed by August 1, 2022.
All applications must include a link to an mp3 recording of repertoire of the musician’s choice (max 20 minutes). The recording must be made within the six-month period preceding the application deadline (December 1, 2021 through June 1, 2022), and should include at least two contrasting selections by different composers. NO EDITS OR ENHANCEMENTS ARE PERMITTED, AND EACH PIECE MUST BE PERFORMED IN ONE TAKE. The proposed solo work may not be included.
Applicants will be informed of their standing by email or phone no later than August 1, 2022. Finalists will be heard in a live audition of all or part of their proposed solo work(s) (max 15 minutes) by a panel of adjudicators in September 2022 (the exact date of the Finals will be communicated in the notification).
Applicants must provide the Lethbridge Symphony with three hard copies of the score (including piano reduction) at least one week before the Live Finals, and their own accompanist(s).
The live final auditions are open to the public; the winner will be announced at that time.
At all levels of the competition the decisions of the adjudicators will be final and without appeal. By signing the application form, the applicant agrees to accept all conditions of the competition as outlined herein.
