Started in 1985 through the generosity of the Helen Johnson Memorial Fund, the Young Artist Competition has been held every other year by the Lethbridge Symphony for over three decades. The event is aimed at talented young classical musicians playing at a minimum Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music (or equivalent) level, who are full time students living or studying in Alberta.

2011 – Matt Groenheide, percussion
2009 – Matthew Blackburn, piano
2007 – Emma Parkinson, soprano
2005 – Graeme Roset, piano
2003 – Magdalena von Eccher, piano
2001 – Marlie Grant, French horn

Finalists are selected by a panel of blind adjudicators and informed of their standing by August 1, 2020. The winner of the Live Audition Finals held in September 2020 will be invited back to perform as a soloist with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra in the 2021-2022 Season, along with a generous cash prize. A cash prize for Second and Third place are also awarded, with truly exceptional finalists occasionally invited to return as a future soloist.
