MSQ brings together two of Schubert’s most famous encounters with death, and neither looks away. The String Quartet in D minor, D.810 (“Death and the Maiden”), one of the most recognized and frequently performed works in the chamber repertoire, remains as gripping as ever, its raw intensity driven by fear, urgency, and a sense of inevitability. Alongside it, the Erlkönig - perhaps the most terrifying story set to music - with its galloping pulse and shifting voices recast for string quartet, conjures a pursuit that never loosens its grip. One hour, Saturday night: you won’t want this ride to end.
