This concert features two guest artists, Airdrie Ignas and Alina Khvatova.  The evening begins with Jocelyn Morlock’s work, Cobalt.

The element cobalt was originally named after a kobold, a mischievous and possibly evil goblin or sprite found in German folklore, for its troublesome nature.  The luminous cobalt blue of the night sky, just before it becomes completely dark, is one of the most beautiful colours found in nature, yet it is visible only for a very short time every evening.  Its beauty is as transient and fleeting as this music.

Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony was composed as a grand memorial to his idol, Richard Wagner; the composer claimed he heard the main theme in a dream.  The second movement’s deeply emotive second movement features Wagner tubas, rarely seen or heard by concert audiences - and you will experience four!  BBC Music Magazine called this work one of the 20 greatest symphonies of all time.
